Velodyssee Day 2: Huelgoat to Mellionec
We were greeted in the morning by the cheerful Claudine and a bountiful petit déjeuner consisting of a variety of breads, ewe yogurt, fresh fruit, juices and 4 types of honey. Lauran briefed us on the route and off we rode.
The day started with a lovely downhill through towns that had seen better days and woods with hiking paths along the way.
We eventually found eurovelo 1. The shaded path was lovely in the morning sun. We rode along woods and corn fields. The morning light played in the trees and along the fringes of the path. The trail surface was packed dirt and gravel but well maintained.. The Velodyssee route was well marked for the most part but invariably there were several spots where discussion ensued as to whether we were on the right course. The going was slow due to the extra weight of the panniers and the gravel. We learned the value of shade and a gentle breeze as the temperature climbed into the mid 80s.
We stopped for the french version of fast food at La Cantine des Chefs which was quite tasty and did not include deep-fried anything.

Stephanie and leader Lauran discussing the route! |
In Carhaix we were to meet up with the “canal de Nantes à Brest”. The collision of brains, paper maps and gps technology soon ensued. Heads were bent over maps and opinions were raised as to the best route to our night’s lodging. In the end our dear friend google led us on a very muddy footpath to the lovely Les Etangs de Pitié and host Madame Chouët
Along the route we met friendly cyclists from France and Great Britain; each with an interesting story to share. Other interesting occurrences: Betsy claims to have seen a bunny swim after it panicked at the approaching bikes and jumped into the canal. As the sun grew hotter and our water supply became dangerously low, Stephanie is certain she saw a (mirage ) canal side shop were we were able to purchase cold water, Orangina, and ice pops.
