Velodyssee Day 4: Scenes along the canal
Today we left the lovely town of Pontivy enroute to the even lovelier town of Josselin!
Our route today was completely along the canal with the exception of a few detours along the way. After an initial incline we soon found ourselves cruising downstream on pavement at a good clip of nearly 12 miles per hour.
The terrain changed from rolling hills of woodland to flatter farmland featuring grain silos and windmills. The pavement smoothed out as well and was a joy to pedal upon!
Although the day was overcast, we were glad to be out of the direct sun especially as the temperature neared 90 and the humidity HIGH.
John found us the most excellent lunch spot today (hurray John). Crêperie des Forges was in an old stone building along the canal. We all ordered buckwheat crepes followed by ice cream and cafe. Oh, and bottles of water and Orangina! We love John!
Crêperie Des Forges
Speaking of woodlands. While riding through a thick stand of trees and hoping to see a deer or fox, we heard a young girl’s blood-curdling scream! Stephanie and Betsy were just jumping off the bikes to run to the rescue when the young lady in question flew over us on a zip line 🫣. Crisis averted.
Did I mention the pavement? Yesterday by the end of the day we were covered in layers of dust. Today only a bit of grit and grime. And the riding effort so much less. Pete did mention that none of us took into consideration that we would be carrying 20+ pounds of luggage and how much slower our progress is each day. We had thought that the 30 mile average daily ride would be finished by early afternoon but we are often arriving at our destination closer to 4 or 5. Oh, well, just in time for cocktails and charcuterie.
Today John was our route leader and was doing a bit of bragging about not getting lost for once…well not until he made us climb a 30% grade only to have us turn around. But hey, the view over the town was spectacular!
